Formation of Earth & the pre-biotic period

  • Sun's Birthday: About 4,500 million years ago, two-thirds of the Universe's age.
  • Earth's Baby Steps: Gravity mushed gas and dust together to create Earth.
  • Life? Nope!: Initially, no life. Just gases, but not like today.

Ancient air - what was breathing like?

  • Oxygen: Only a little! It preferred hanging out with iron to make iron oxide. Think of rust; it's everywhere!
  • Methane & Carbon Dioxide: More of these party animals back then. Why? Volcanoes and meteorites! Imagine a hot and gassy birthday party.
  • Temperature: Probably warmer, even though the Sun was 20% shy with its energy. It was like having a giant natural heater!

Mysterious oceans

pH Mystery: The oceans were like mood rings, ranging from pH 5 to pH 11. Talk about mood swings!

Sunbathing on early Earth

  • Ozone: Nope, wasn't around! So, more solar UV rays partied on Earth's surface.
  • UV Rays: High-energy party crashers causing chemical reactions.
  • Lightning? More!: Possibly more lightning, triggering unexpected chemical reactions.
