Cells as life's lego blocks

  • Single-Celled Organisms: Just like a single LEGO piece can be a creation, some tiny organisms are made up of just one cell. Amoebas are a great example of this!
  • Multicellular Organisms: Think of yourself as a massive LEGO castle; a 70kg human is made of nearly 40 trillion cells. That's a lot of building blocks!
  • Specialized Cells: In bigger creatures, like animals and humans, cells have different jobs. Some cells might be the guards at the gate, while others are the castle's chefs, each with a special role.

Cell theory – the big idea 💡

  • Old School Research: Way back in the 17th century, people like Robert Hooke used microscopes like detective magnifying glasses to discover cells.
  • Plant Cells vs Animal Cells: They started with plant cells, which are like puzzle pieces under a microscope, and by the 19th century, they also found animal cells.
  • A Universal Idea: They didn't look at EVERYTHING (that would take forever!), but they found enough evidence to say that all living things are made of cells, just like all LEGO structures are made of bricks.

Exceptions & the staying power of theory 🌟

  • Some Exceptions: Like every rule, there are exceptions. There are some structures in organisms that aren't typical cells. Think of them as those odd LEGO pieces that don't quite fit anywhere, but they're still part of the set.
  • Still Useful: Even with these exceptions, the cell theory is like a golden rule in biology. If a new creature is found, chances are, it's made of cells too!
