Carbon, the star of life

Even though Carbon is only the 15th most abundant element on Earth, life as we know it wouldn't be possible without it. Imagine your favourite band: carbon is the lead singer! That's how important it is.

Bond, covalent bond

Carbon atoms can form covalent bonds, the 007s of atomic bonds - super strong and stable. These bonds occur when carbon shares a pair of electrons with other atoms, be it other carbon atoms or different elements. Picture it like two best friends sharing a secret, which brings them closer together.

Four's a party

A carbon atom can form up to four covalent bonds, meaning it can bond with four atoms of another element. This is like having four arms in a three-legged race, the more connections, the more stable you are! For instance, carbon bonds with four hydrogen atoms to form methane, the stuff that cows burp up a lot.
