Two main types of proteins 🍖

Fibrous proteins - think long & strong! 🧵

  • Structure: Long and thread-like.
  • These don't fold like those intricate origami projects! They're more straightforward.
  • Unlike other proteins, they skip the fancy twists and turns of alpha helices.

📖 Example: Collagen

  • Unique Feature: Made of three polypeptides twisted like a braid (triple helix).
  • Basic Structure: It's like a repeating song chorus of three amino acids: P–G–X. Sing it!
    • P: Proline or hydroxyproline, which hates forming α-helices.
    • G: Glycine. Think of it as a minimalist; its R-group is tiny!
    • X: A wildcard! It changes and allows various collagen forms.

🌍 Real-world relevance: Collagen is like nature's rope. It's super strong, found in our skin, tendons, ligaments, the eyes' outer coat, and more.
