🎸 Setting the Stage: Our cell membranes are like the stage for a rock concert. Imagine all the band members, fans, lights, and speakers. Every component has a role to play. Now, replace the band members with proteins and you get... the cell membrane! Let’s dive into these cool proteins.

Two rockin types of membrane proteins

  • 🎤 Integral Proteins
    • Characteristic: Some part of them is hydrophobic (think of that introverted band member).
    • Position: Stuck inside the hydrocarbon chains, kinda like a guitarist lost in their solo.
    • Depth: Some just touch one phospholipid layer, while others go full rockstar and cross both layers.
    • Subgroup - Transmembrane proteins: These guys extend from one end of the stage to the other. They have hydrophilic parts that wave to the phosphate head fans on both sides.
  • 🎸 Peripheral Proteins
    • Characteristic: Hydrophilic on the surface, just like the crowd-loving drummer.
    • Position: Not inside the membrane but chilling on the side. They hang out with integral proteins.
    • Attachment: Some have VIP passes in the form of a hydrocarbon chain that anchors them to the stage surface.
