What is it? 📦

  • Golgi Apparatus: A stack of flattened, pancake-like sacs (called cisternae).
  • Main Role: Processes polypeptides made by the rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER).

Journey of a polypeptide 🚖

  • Transport: Polypeptides hitch a ride from the rER inside tiny bubble-like vesicles.
  • Remodeling: Imagine polypeptides as blank t-shirts. Inside the cisternae, they get designed! They:
    • Might get a 'carbohydrate sticker' making them a glycoprotein.
    • Sometimes, a sprinkle of phosphate or sulfate is added for an extra touch.
  • Team Assembly: Polypeptides can join others to establish the quaternary structure of proteins. Think of it like building a LEGO set from different pieces!

End of the trip? 🎁

Once a protein's makeover is complete, it's packed and sent off in a vesicle to

  • Lysosome or a food vacuole (like a recycling center or a food pantry).
  • Plasma membrane if it's being secreted out. For example, imagine pancreas cells sending out digestive enzymes like chefs delivering food!
