Welcome aboard this exciting journey as we take a deep dive into the heart of mammals! By the end of our journey, you’ll be mesmerized by how our heart has evolved over time to keep us alive and kicking!

Features of the mammalian heart 🚀

  • Ventricles: Think of these as the strongmen of the heart, with robust muscular walls. Why? To pump blood with force into our arteries! 💪
  • Atria: These are the welcoming chambers collecting blood from veins and then prepping the ventricles for the next big push! They ensure the ventricles are stuffed and ready to go!
  • Atrioventricular Valves: Serving as the heart's security guards, these ensure there's no sneaky backflow of blood to the atria when the powerhouses, aka the ventricles, are contracting.
  • Semilunar Valves: Another set of bodyguards for our heart. They are in charge of directing traffic between the ventricles and the arteries.
  • Cardiac Muscle: This isn't your regular muscle! With branched cells and unique connections, they can beat without any external signals. In simple terms, they're self-starters! 🎉
  • Pacemaker: Located in the right atrium, this is like the heart's drummer setting the beat! Thanks to the sinoatrial node, every heartbeat gets its initiation signal.
  • Septum: This wall is the ultimate divider, ensuring oxygen-rich blood and oxygen-depleted blood don’t mix. It’s like the wall between two very different parties!
  • Coronary Vessels: They are the heart’s delivery service, ensuring the heart itself gets fresh oxygen and nutrients while also removing waste.
