Integration of organs 101 📌

  • Organs in animal bodies work together like the members of a super-talented orchestra.
  • How? By communication and transferring stuff like materials and energy.

🌏 Real-world Example: Think of a sports team. For them to score, they need to communicate seamlessly, both verbally (shouting to pass the ball) and non-verbally (knowing where team members will be). Just like that, our organs need to be in sync!

How do organs chit-chat? 🗣️

  • Endocrine System

    • Role: Sends out chemical messages (hormones).
    • Where from? Glands.
    • How? Using our bloodstream.
    • Whom to? Pretty much anywhere in our body.
    • But, only certain cells, the "chosen ones", respond!
  • Nervous System

    • Role: Sends electrical messages (nerve impulses).
    • Where from? Neurons.
    • How? Using the neuron superhighway.
    • Whom to? Specific places (like sending a private message).

🌏 Real-world Example: If your body was the internet

  • Endocrine System = Broadcasting a post on social media. Everyone sees it, but only interested folks interact.
  • Nervous System = Direct messaging a friend. Only they see and respond.

Hormonal vs nervous signalling - showdown!

  • Hormonal Signalling

    • Signal: Chemical
    • Transmission: Bloodstream
    • Response Type: Growth, mood changes (like feeling thirsty), puberty things, and metabolic stuff (like regulating blood sugar).
    • Speed: Slow and steady.
    • Duration: Long, like a marathon, until the hormone breaks down.
  • Nervous Signalling

    • Signal: Electrical, thanks to cations crossing membranes.
    • Transmission: Neurons
    • Response Type: Muscle movements (walking, heartbeat), or gland secretion (like sweating).
    • Speed: Lightning-fast! ⚡
    • Duration: Short, like a sprint.
