Hey future Biologists! Get ready to dive into the fascinating world of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Imagine making babies but like, in a lab! Let's understand how hormones play a big role here.

Terms You Need To Know 🤓

  • In Vivo: Fertilization inside the body. 'Vivo' means 'living.' Like, you know, the classic 'birds and bees' story.
  • In Vitro: Fertilization outside the body in lab conditions. 'Vitro' means 'glass.' Think of a baby getting started in a test tube.
  • FSH: Follicle Stimulating Hormone. It's like the motivational speaker for egg cells. "Come on, guys, let’s get growing!"
  • LH: Luteinizing Hormone. The wingman of FSH.
  • Oestradiol & Progesterone: The hormonal dream team that controls the menstrual cycle.
  • hCG: Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. The baby's first 'hello' to the mom.

Stages of IVF 👣

Downregulation

  • What?: It's like hitting the pause button on the woman's natural menstrual cycle.

  • How?: A drug is given daily for about 2 weeks via injection or nasal spray.

  • Why?: To stop the secretion of FSH and LH, thus stopping the normal menstrual cycle.

Real-world example: Think of it like pausing your Netflix series to grab some popcorn. Now, doctors control the remote!

Daily FSH Injections

  • What?: Follicles are stimulated to grow using FSH.

  • How?: Intramuscular injections daily for 7-12 days.

  • Why?: To develop more follicles (8-15 is ideal) than a natural cycle would.

Real-world example: Imagine your garden only grows one flower every spring, but you want a bouquet. You give it special plant food, and boom, a whole bunch of flowers!
