What on Earth are polypeptides? 🌍🤔

  • Polypeptides are chains made of amino acids, connected one by one by ribosomes.
  • They’re like that fun bead necklace you made at summer camp, but for cells! 📿

How do ribosomes know which amino acid to pick? 🤷‍♀️🎲

  • Ribosomes don't just play a guessing game! They follow the genetic code's instructions like a recipe in a cookbook.
  • The genetic code includes 20 different amino acids. Think of them as 20 unique bead colors for your necklace.

Math fun - calculating the potential of polypeptides 🧮✨

  • Dipeptides: Two amino acids linked. With 20 choices for each, there are 20 × 20 or 400 possible dipeptide combinations.
  • Tripeptides: 20 × 20 × 20 = 8,000 possibilities.
  • So, for a chain with "n" amino acids, the possibilities = 20^n.
  • Imagine a chain with 400 amino acids: That's 20^400 possibilities! 😲 Even calculators get dizzy and call it infinity!
