🌎 Species Distribution: Where a species hangs out on Earth!

  • Picture a map. Now imagine putting stickers on all the places your favorite species lives. That's a distribution map! 📍

Plant distribution & those tricky abiotic factors 🌵🌸

  • Abiotic Factors = non-living things that can affect where species live.

    • For plants, these include:
      • Temperature 🌡
      • Water availability 💧
      • Light intensity ☀
      • Soil pH (is it acid or alkaline?)
      • Soil salinity (how salty is the soil?)
      • Available mineral nutrients 🌱
  • Range of Tolerance: Every plant's individual comfort zone for each abiotic factor.

    • If one factor is out of its comfort range, the plant won't grow there.
  • Real-World Examples:

    • Tropical plants be like: "Frost? No thanks!" ❄🌴 They can't handle the cold because they don't have built-in "antifreeze" like northern plants.
    • Northern plants in the tropics: "It's too hot, and I'm sweating (transpiring) too much!" 🌲☀ They're not built for hot, tropical weather.
