What's a photosystem anyway?

  • Think of photosystems as the ultimate band of pigments that know how to party with light! 🎤🎶
  • Location: Chillin' in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts.
  • Composition
    • Main players: About 100 chlorophyll molecules.
    • Supporting roles: 30 accessory pigment molecules (like backup dancers! 💃).
🌟 Fun Fact: Not all bands (photosystems) are the same. Different organisms have their unique lineup!

The supporting pigments

Carotene and xanthophyll are like the hype guys of the group, backing up the main act (chlorophyll) and adding extra colors to the show.

Structure breakdown

  • Core complex: The lead singer 🎤.
  • Light-harvesting antenna complexes: The background vocalists absorbing all the light and energy.

The concert of light & energy

  • When pigment molecules (our performers) absorb light, they get super hyped (excited electrons jump to higher energy levels).
  • Fun Physics Bit
    • Blue light is like a double espresso shot – high energy. ☕️💥
    • Red light? More like a relaxing chamomile tea. 🍵
