The Digestive Journey 🍔

  • Imagine a roller coaster track that starts from your mouth and ends at, well, the other end! That's your gut.
  • As your food takes a ride on this track, it's greeted with secretory hi-fives from gland cells within the gut wall and from "guest" glands like the pancreas. It's like those water guns at amusement parks, but with enzymes.
  • These enzymes break big molecules into small, absorbable stars, like sugars and amino acids, which get VIP access to the bloodstream.

The Muscle Moves of the Gut 💃

  • Smooth Moves: The gut's muscle wall isn't the jacked-up kind (that's striated muscle). It's more like a yoga enthusiast - smooth muscle.

    • Types
      • 🥖 Longitudinal Muscle: Like baguettes, running along the gut.
      • 🍩 Circular Muscle: Donut-shaped rings around the gut.
  • Muscle Behavior

    • Smooth Muscle: Can do a slow dance continuously and can break into a faster jig occasionally.
    • Striated Muscle: Chills until its favorite song (stimulation) plays, then it gets groovy.
  • Peristalsis: Imagine the wave at a sports game. That's peristalsis for the gut!

    • Behind the food: Circular muscles squeeze so food doesn't do a moonwalk back towards the mouth.
    • Where the food is: Longitudinal muscles ensure the food conga-lines forward.

Oesophagus & stomach surf 🌊

  • In the oesophagus, food catches a speedy peristaltic wave all the way to the stomach.
  • Only one surfing direction: away from the mouth. If food tries to surf back during vomiting, it's using a different technique - powered by abdominal muscles!
