Introduction

  • 🌱 What? Sigmoid growth: A specific pattern of population growth that happens in stages.
  • Where? Natural ecosystems.

Model Organisms

  • 🍀 Duckweed

    • 🏞️ Habitat: Ponds and lakes.
    • 🌿 Characteristics: A photosynthetic, stemless water plant. Each tiny floating plant has potentially a single root underneath.
    • Reproduction: Asexual. New plants (fronds) grow and separate from the parent.
    • 🥤 How to Grow: Place on the surface of water inside beakers or cups.
  • 🍞 Yeast

    • Habitat: Surface of fruits and other sugar-rich locations.
    • Characteristics: Saprotrophic fungus, ovoid cells.
    • Reproduction: Asexual. Produces extra cells by budding (thanks to mitosis!).
    • 🍻 Fun Fact: This little organism helps us get bread and alcohol!

Experiment Set-Up

  • Start with a small population of the organism.
  • Ensure tons of resources are available for growth.
  • Ensure no other organisms interfere.
  • Monitor the numbers either by
    • 📈 Datalogging (techy way).
    • 🧮 Regular counts (old school but reliable).
