💡 Main Idea: DNA is like a book, and just like books sometimes have typos, DNA can have errors. But, good news! DNA has its own built-in proofreading system that ensures errors are kept at a minimum.

What's DNA Proofreading?

  • DNA polymerases are the main characters here! They copy or replicate DNA.
  • Think of them as authors who rarely make typos. But when they do, they correct them pronto!
  • Why? Because errors in our DNA can lead to mutations (and we don't want too many of those).

When does Proofreading Happen?

  • Right after a potentially "wrong" letter (nucleotide) is added during DNA replication.
  • Imagine typing a document on your computer, and the moment you type a wrong word, the spellcheck highlights it. It's kinda like that, but on a microscopic scale!
