Gene Expression - The Basics 🎉

  • What it is: It's how a gene's info has visible effects on an organism.
  • Fun Fact: Your genes are like an 'instruction manual' but instead of teaching you how to build a desk, they decide things like your eye color!

But, Wait! 🤔

Just because you have a gene doesn’t mean its traits show up. For instance, not all sequels are made into movies (unfortunately or fortunately 🍿).

Genes & Proteins - The Dynamic Duo 🧩

  • Genes: Their main gig is determining the order of amino acids in polypeptides.
  • Polypeptides: Chain of amino acids. Many of these come together to form proteins.
  • Proteins: They actually decide your visible characteristics.
  • Real-world example: Think of genes as a recipe. The recipe (gene) specifies ingredients (amino acids). Once cooked (protein is formed), we get the final dish that you can see and taste!

Two-Step Process - Transcription & Translation 🎬

  • Transcription: Turning DNA into RNA.
  • Translation: RNA directs the making of a protein.
