Hey future biologists! 👋 Let's dive into the amazing world of human genes, their locations, and how all this connects to real-life stuff like diseases. Trust me, it's not as hard as it sounds! Let's break it down.

What are Loci? 📍

First things first, each gene in your body has a 'home address' on a chromosome. This address is called its locus (plural: loci). Imagine your neighborhood as a chromosome and each house as a gene; the street address of each house is its locus. Cool, huh?

🌟 Takeaway: Locus is the specific location of a gene on a chromosome.

Base Sequence & Alleles 🔠

Every gene has a unique series of DNA bases. Just like you can recognize your house by its design, scientists can recognize genes by their base sequence. Sometimes, genes have a slightly different sequence, known as alleles. Think of them as different color variations of the same car model!

🌟 Takeaway: Alleles are different versions of the same gene.

Real-World Example - PKU in Turkey & Australia 📊

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a genetic disease that occurs in Turkey and Australia. Let's talk numbers

  • In Turkey, 1 in 2,500 babies has PKU. That's a lot!
  • In Australia, the PKU allele frequency is 0.01. That's like saying 1 in every 100 people is a carrier.

🤔 Discussion: What do you think? Are these rates higher or lower than you expected?
