Sun's Role in Climate

  • The sun sends short-wave radiation (e.g., ultraviolet light) towards Earth.
  • Some bounce back into space, but most get absorbed by Earth and is re-emitted as long-wave radiation.

🚗 Real-World Example: Think of Earth like a car parked in the sun with windows closed. The inside of the car heats up because the sun's rays enter the car but can't easily escape.

Greenhouse Gases (GHGs)

  • They keep Earth warmer by trapping heat. 🌡
  • Without GHGs, Earth's average temperature would be below freezing! ❄
  • Main GHGs: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Methane (CH4).
  • Humans release a lot of these gases, which is why they're called "anthropogenic sources" of climate change.

🍔 Real-World Example: Just like how fast food contributes to our diet more than it should, human actions release more CO2 and CH4 than Earth can handle!

Sources of Carbon Dioxide & Methane

  • CO2
    • Released by: breathing in organisms and burning of biomass/fossil fuels.
    • Removed by: photosynthesis and dissolving in oceans.
  • CH4
    • Released by: marshes, landfills, fossil fuel extraction, and melting permafrost.

🌳 Real-World Example: Trees take in CO2 when they grow, like a vacuum cleaner for our air. On the other hand, landfills are like methane factories, releasing CH4 when waste decomposes.
