Intro to Phenology 🌼

  • Phenology is the study of the timing of biological events. Imagine it like nature's calendar! 📅
  • Phenologists = Biologists who are basically nature’s timekeepers! 🕰️

Why is Phenology Important? 🌸

  • Can provide evidence of climate changes like global warming.
  • Offers insights into how plants and animals are responding to changes in their environment.

Photoperiod 101 🌞

  • Definition: The length of time an organism is exposed to light during a 24-hour period. Also known as “day length”. Think of it like an organism's daily sunlight dosage! ☀️
  • Fun Fact: Day length changes with seasons, especially near Earth's poles. But guess what? It remains stable year after year and isn't affected by global warming or climate change.

Plants & Photoperiod 🌱

  • Flowering Time
    • Some plants bloom when day length is short - e.g., chrysanthemums and poinsettias (those vibrant festive plants we see during the holidays! 🎄).
    • Others only flower when day length is long, like lettuce, spinach, beets, and potatoes.
  • Deciduous Trees and Day Length
    • Shorter day lengths in autumn = growth stops right before winter. Ever noticed those little protective covers (buds) at the end of tree branches? That's the tree getting ready for winter! This is called 'bud set'. 🍂
    • The start of the growth season = 'budburst'. Think of it as trees waking up from a winter nap and stretching out new leaves! 🌿
    • Key Point: While some species rely on day length for budburst, many depend on temperature.
