🎉 Welcome, future scientists! Prepare for a fascinating adventure into the world of atoms! You're about to uncover the secrets of tiny particles that make up everything around us. 🎉

The structure of the atom 🧪

Atoms are like tiny solar systems! Here's how:

Nucleus (The Sun in Our Atomic Solar System)

  • Contains protons (positively charged) and neutrons (no charge).
  • Makes up more than 99.9% of the atom's mass (Just like the Sun holds 99.8% of the solar system's mass!).
  • Positively charged.
  • Super small, but super dense!

Electrons (Planets Orbiting the Sun)

  • Occupy the region outside the nucleus.
  • Negatively charged and orbit the nucleus.
  • Held in place by electrostatic attraction (like magnets, not gravity).

Subatomic Particles: Protons, Neutrons, Electrons

  • The tiny building blocks of an atom!

Rutherford's great experiment 💥

In 1911, Ernest Rutherford shot alpha particles at gold foil, like firing mini-cannons at treasure!

Results

  • Planetary model (Rutherford model) proposed.
  • Electrons orbit the nucleus like planets around the Sun.

Imagine it like shooting a basketball through a hoop with only the rim present - that's how empty most of the atom is!
