🌌 The World of Bonds: Have you ever wondered how two hydrogen atoms become best friends? It’s all about their electrifying dance!

The introduction of mr. sigma (σ) bond

  • Think of two hydrogen atoms playing a game of tag. Each has an unpaired electron, in the 1s orbital. And... they're 'It'!🏃‍♂️
  • As they get closer, their 1s orbitals begin to overlap. This is like them giving each other a high-five!🤚
  • When this high-five is perfect, a special connection (covalent bond) forms between them.
  • Picture an invisible string connecting the hearts (nuclei) of these two atoms. This string is called the bond axis or internuclear axis.
  • The 1s orbitals overlap along this magical string to form a sigma bond, which means there's a lot of electron buzz happening along the string!
  • Fun Fact: Not just 1s orbitals, sigma bonds can form between different types of orbitals. Kinda like how different dance pairs can create a unique dance routine!
