Funky functional group isomers!🎈

  • What's the deal with them?
    • They're basically BFFs with a twist – two molecules that have the same atoms but in different arrangements, leading to different functional groups.
  • Cool examples to remember
    • 🍹 C2H6O: Can be a refreshing drink or a mysterious ether!
      • Ethanol (Cheers!): An alcohol with a hydroxyl (-OH) group.
      • Methoxymethane (Sounds fancy, right?): An ether with an alkoxy group.
    • 🌿 C3H6O: Nature's trick!
      • Propanone (Nail polish remover, anyone?): It’s a ketone.
      • Propanal: It's an aldehyde. Smells sharp and fruity.
    • 🍎 C2H4O2: Your salad dressing's secret!
      • Methyl methanoate: An ester that smells like apples.
      • Ethanoic acid (Or vinegar!): It’s sour-tasting carboxylic acid.

Molecular models – the 3D movies of chemistry💻

  • Three amigos with the same formula C3H8O
    • Propan-1-ol - A type of alcohol.
    • Propan-2-ol - Another alcohol, commonly used as a disinfectant.
    • Methoxyethane - An ether.
  • Fun tasks to understand these amigos better:
    • 🖍 Structural Formulas: Sketch them out!
      • Full structural, condensed structural, and skeletal formula for each.
    • 🧸 Physical Models: Use a molecular model kit.
      • These are like LEGO, but for molecules. Build the three isomers!
    • 💻 Digital Divas: Hop online!
      • Use MolView or a similar tool.
      • Play around with different views: ball & stick, space-filling, and the colorful MEP surface.
  • Deep Dive - Comparing Models:
    • Which is better? Well, each has its strength.
      • E.g., ball & stick show connections clearly, while space-filling models show how the molecule "feels" in 3D space.
    • Molecular Structure = Personality:
      • Structure dictates physical properties (like boiling point) and reactivity.
