Hello there! In these notes, we'll be exploring a fun, time-twisting topic

Time in Narrative. Just as Doctor Who can zip through past, present, and future, time in a story is flexible and can be bent, stretched, and reshaped by the author. Sounds cool, right? Let's dive in!

Past & present – more than just themes

First, let's think about how time usually works. It's like a strict teacher, always moving forward, never allowing us to go back. Now imagine the story is your playground, and you are the author with a time machine. You can bounce between the past and the present, blend the two together, or even jump to the future!

Example: In 'The Hunger Games,' Suzanne Collins often flashes back to Katniss's past experiences which provide context to her present actions.

Chronological vs. non - chronological storytelling

Many stories follow a straight line, starting at the beginning and moving step-by-step to the end. Like walking your dog, from your house, to the park, and back. But stories can also twist and turn, loop backward and jump forward, like a thrilling roller-coaster ride.

Example: 'Memento,' a movie directed by Christopher Nolan, progresses backward – it starts from the end and works its way to the beginning.
