Overview

Important stats & facts

  • We have less than 1% of all freshwater available for use, with the remainder locked away in ice sheets and glaciers. A big chunk of ice-cold drink anyone?
  • Annually, 12,500 cubic kilometres of water are available for human use - that's like 5 million Olympic-sized swimming pools!
  • Per person, this means about 6,600 cubic metres each year. But hold your hoses, if we keep going like this, we'll only have 4,800 cubic metres each by 2025.
  • Freshwater supply isn't shared out equally around the world, just like your mum's famous apple pie at a family gathering!

Geographic & seasonal variations

  • About 75% of the yearly rainfall happens in areas with less than a third of the world's population. Imagine having a birthday party but most of the cake lands up in your neighbour's house!
  • A whopping two-thirds of the world's population live in places receiving just a quarter of the world's annual rainfall. It's like living in a desert while watching an oasis on a distant horizon.

Water access

  • In 2015, about 844 million people didn't have basic access to drinking water. That's like twice the whole population of the US not having a simple glass of water!
  • Comparing water consumption: A North American or Western European adult chugs about 3 cubic metres of water a day, whereas an Asian or African adult consumes less, with around 1.4 and 1.1 cubic metres a day respectively. A classic case of having a small versus large soda size.
