Aquaculture 🐟

  • Definition: Aquaculture is like farming, but for fish! It's all about raising fish commercially, mainly for our dinner plates. 🍽️
  • Rise & Shine: Aquaculture became the "in thing" since the 1990s. If it were a celebrity, its popularity chart.
  • Not to be confused with: Fish hatcheries. These are the "good samaritans" releasing young fish into the wild, maybe for fun fishing trips or to boost the fish's natural numbers in the wild.

Top chartbusters in fish farms🐠

  • Big Five: Salmon (The Beyoncé of fish farms, especially in Norway, covering 85% of sales!), carp, tilapia, catfish, and cod.
  • Why Salmon?: We kinda messed up. We loved wild Atlantic salmon a bit too much, so their numbers in the North Atlantic & Baltic seas went 📉 due to overfishing. That's when farming became the savior.

Diving deep issues with aquaculture🐡

  • Habitat Loss: Think of it as replacing forests with malls, but underwater.
  • Pollution Overload: The fishes aren't having organic meals. Their feed, plus things like antibiotics and antifouling agents, mess up the water.
  • Health Issues: Fish get sick too. But spreading diseases in these farms can be like catching a cold in a crowded train.
  • The Great Escape: Sometimes fish go rogue and escape! If they're genetically modified, it's like releasing a sci-fi creature into the wild.

High maintenance alert🔧

  • Aquaculture can be like that luxurious sports car: Expensive. There's the cost of keeping fish healthy, using medicines, and even breeding programs.
  • But, hey, the outputs are impressive! High yield per area and per farmer.
