From 2010 to 2030, international tourist arrivals worldwide are expected to grow by 3.3% per year, reaching 1.8 billion by 2030.

The market share of emerging economies has been increasing, from 30% in 1980 to 45% in 2014, and is forecasted to reach 57% by 2030. The growth rate in tourist arrivals in emerging economies like Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe will be double that in advanced economies.

Asia and the Pacific will see the strongest growth, with market shares projected to increase from 22% in 2010 to 30% in 2030. Conversely, Europe&#39;s share will decline from 51% to 41%.

Costa Rica, known for its well-organized government promotions and reputation as the safest country in Central America, attracts around 1 million visitors annually, contributing significantly to its economy.

Costa Rica&#39;s tourism is unique, with a large portion of visitors belonging to special-interest groups like bird-watchers. It also practices sustainable ecotourism through its dispersed, small-scale tourism initiatives.

Monteverde&#39;s cloud forest, a major attraction in Costa Rica, has grown from 328 ha to about 14,200 ha since its establishment in 1972. It houses a rich biodiversity of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The nature of tourists visiting Monteverde has evolved, with visitors now seeking a balance between entertainment, adventure, and knowledge.

Tourism growth in Monteverde has brought new businesses and job opportunities, absorbing workers displaced by declining agriculture. Over 400 full-time and 140 part-time jobs have been created, along with indirect employment and multiplier effects. Local farmers and artisanal industries also benefit from the tourism industry. Monteverde&#39;s tourism sector is responsible for about 18% of Costa Rica&#39;s total tourist revenue.

Formal and informal education programs have been strengthened. Both the local community and the tourists learn from each other, increasing awareness of the value of natural resources.

Despite the benefits, the growing resident and tourist population is putting strain on existing infrastructure. Issues such as water supply, refuse collection, and increasing land prices need to be addressed.

Remember, while tourism can generate significant revenue and create jobs, it&#39;s crucial to ensure that it&#39;s sustainable and does not harm the environment or local communities. We can see that in the case of Costa Rica, where they have managed to balance these aspects well. However, the challenges they face highlight the importance of infrastructure and resource management in the face of a growing tourism industry.
