Trafficked people
- Trafficking is a serious global issue. Between 2010 and 2012, over 27,000 victims were identified in 83 countries.
- Fun fact, it's not always about crossing borders! About 70% of trafficking is international, but 30% is domestic, happening within the same country.
- Generally, people are trafficked from poorer countries to richer ones. If it were a movie, Europe, North America, and the Middle East would be the "big bad villains" attracting the most victims.
- Inter-regional trafficking is a complex game. It involves passports, visas, and transport, both local and international. It's much like planning a vacation, except it's a crime and not at all fun.
- The Middle East is the “cool kid on the block”, having the highest share of inbound trafficked people from other regions.
Counterfeit goods
- Counterfeit goods are a massive industry, making over $250 billion a year. However, they are also the "triple-threat" causing labour exploitation, environmental damage, and health risks.
- The big baddies of this trade are criminal groups like the Mafia in Europe and Americas, and the Triad and Yakuza in Asia.
- Corruption and bribery act as "backstage crew", supporting the illegal trade, especially during international transport.
- Governments lose tax revenues and spend more on policing because of counterfeit goods. Imagine a student who not only doesn't pay their canteen bills but also causes extra cleaning work!
Environmental & labor exploitation
- The counterfeit trade is kind of like a naughty kid who colors outside the lines. It involves unregulated use of dyes and toxins and their illegal disposal.
- Workers in this trade have jobs that are underpaid, unregulated, and often unsafe, similar to working in a dangerous factory with no safety gear.
Counterfeit product examples
- Cars and car parts, like a fake "Lamborghooni" made with low-quality parts.
- Chemicals and cosmetics, such as cheap knock-offs of Chanel No.5.
- Electronics, such as a "Pear" phone that barely works.
- Food and drinks, like candy that tastes like plastic.
- Fraudulent medicines, including fake drugs for serious diseases, a real danger to people's health.
