Natural resources & global trade

  • Natural resources are the backbone of world trade.
    • Example: The Middle East dominates in oil exports due to their vast oil reserves.
  • Countries with different raw materials also play their part in trade, such as:
    • Food products, timber, minerals, and fish.
  • Nations rich in mineral resources, like Australia and Canada, exploit these resources, contributing significantly to their economies.
    • Fun Fact: Did you know Australia is the world's leading exporter of iron ore and coal?
  • Diversification of economies:
    • Countries like the UK and Germany, initially major coal and steel producers, have diversified their economies, ensuring they don't rely solely on these resources.
    • High-Income Countries (HICs), Middle-Income Countries (MICs), and Low-Income Countries (LICs) often rely on exporting their raw materials. Brazil and South Africa are doing this to diversify and expand their economies.
  • Countries that rely on a single resource product are more vulnerable to issues like climate extremes, disease, and currency fluctuations.
    • Real-World Example: St Lucia's economy heavily relies on bananas and Malawi on tobacco.

Geographic isolation & market access

  • Geographic isolation can limit access to world markets.
    • High transport costs and time, tariffs for export, and charges for airspace use can impact countries, especially those that are landlocked.
    • Example: South Sudan has to pay Sudan or Kenya to export its oil to the coast.
  • The theme of "access to market" is significant in geography and influences location in relation to markets and labor.

ICT, maps & diagrams

  • Places with good Internet connectivity can communicate more effectively and engage in global interactions.
  • Deep-water ports facilitate shipping and trade. Conversely, landlocked countries find it difficult to trade.
  • ICT advancements facilitate global interactions but are limited by political and environmental constraints.
  • Flow diagrams, choropleth maps, and polar graphs can illustrate the volume and complexity of these interactions.
