Table of content

Iraq, Kuwait and the Guide War (1990-1)

Saddam Hussein and Post-Iran War Promises

  • After the Iran war in 1988, promises: peace & prosperity.

  • Reality: Hardship & terror.

  • Fun Fact! Instead of rebuilding Iraq, Saddam Hussein maintained a massive army and pursued advanced weaponry.

Who are the Kurds?

  • Comprise ~20% of Iraq's population.

  • Main traits: Muslims, not Arab, different language.

  • Locations: North of Iraq, borders with Syria, Turkey & Iran.

  • Real World Example: Imagine if 20% of the US population spoke a different language and had a distinct culture; that's the Kurdish situation in Iraq!

Kurdish History & Quest for Kurdistan

  • Since Iraq's creation in 1921: Kurds enjoyed autonomy.

  • However, they aspired for a separate homeland called Kurdistan.

  • Persistent conflicts with Iraqi troops since 1921.

Iran & The Kurds in the 1970s & 80s

  • Iran helped Iraqi Kurds to weaken Iraq, their rival.

  • During the Iran-Iraq war (1980), Iran increased its support for Kurds.

  • Kurds collaborated with Iran for coordinated attacks against Iraq.

  • In Short: It's like two schoolmates joining forces against a common bully!
