Fun Intro: 🎉

Imagine you're on a date with history and the topic of Deng Xiaoping and his take on democracy comes up. Would you have enough to keep the conversation going? Let's dive in!

Deng's "Thanks, but No Thanks" to Democracy 🙅‍♂️

  • Context: Post-1986 protests.
  • Bourgeois liberalisation: Sounds fancy! It's Deng's term for the idea that modernising = adopting Western-style democracy.
  • Why Deng said "No" to democracy
    • Size Matters: China = HUGE country + HUGE population.
    • Education: A lot of this population was uneducated. Conducting elections? Not practical, according to Deng.
    • "Trust Us" Policy: Deng’s belief - Let the informed government lead the uninformed masses.
  • Real World Analogy: Imagine letting kids decide the family’s budget. Deng believed that the Chinese population, like kids, weren’t ready to make big decisions.

A Tale of Two Views 🤔

  • CCP Hardliners: Trust the enlightened government to guide the uninformed people.
  • Pro-democracy Peeps: Not cool! Power shouldn't be monopolized by CCP leaders. They believed the government wasn't delivering the promised advancements.

Deng's Economic Reforms: Not Everyone's Cup of Tea ☕

  • When? 1979-89.
  • Initial Thrill: Early 1980s brought economic growth and excitement. Think of it as the honeymoon phase.
  • Then, the Speed Bumps
    • Agricultural & Industrial Drop: After a party, there’s always a cleanup!
    • End of Subsidies: No more protective shields for urban folks against high prices. It's like removing training wheels suddenly!
    • Inflation’s Sneaky Move: Reduced real wages for workers.
    • Overcrowding Alert: More people moving to cities = crowded places. Imagine a packed concert, but it's your daily life!
