Quick Recap 🔥

  • After WWII, USA was the economic and political powerhouse.
  • Soviet expansionism = a big "No No" for USA.
  • Europe was a bigger concern than Latin America for the US.

Things took a twist 🎉

  • Latin America thought, “Hey, now that the war is over, USA will help us grow economically.” But surprise! USA was like, “We've got bigger fish to fry in Europe.”
  • President Truman didn't see communism spreading in Latin America. Why?
    • 🌍 Distance and Tech: USSR was too far, and they didn’t have the military tech to reach Latin America.
    • The Power of Faith: The Catholic Church didn’t vibe with Marxism. So, communism wasn't that hip in Latin American politics.
    • 🎙️ Pop Star Leaders: Leaders like Perón in Argentina gave people what they wanted, which decreased the charm of communism.
    • 💂 Military Control: They played the big brother role and said “No Entry” to communist activities.

CIA Gets Involved 🕵️

  • They dropped a hot doc in April 1947 titled, ‘Soviet Objectives in Latin America’.
  • In simpler terms: "Here’s how we think the USSR might try to mess with Latin America."

📜 Document Excerpt

The Soviets want to ruin the USA’s good vibes in Latin America and stir the pot, making countries not so friendly anymore. How can they make the West weaker without directly getting involved?
