  • Independence and Economy 🍌☕
    • Gained independence in 1821.
    • Majorly depended on exporting agricultural items like bananas and coffee.
  • Here Comes the Big Companies 🏭
    • Early 20th century: International companies set foot in Guatemala.
    • The United Fruit Company (UFCO) was the big player
      • Owned 42% of the land! 😲
      • Hired over 10,000 Guatemalans.
  • The Population Dilemma 🌆
    • 1940s: Around 4.5 million people.
    • Woah, almost 90% had no land! Also, not much access to education or health. 😟

A Wind of Change: Presidential Era 🏛

  • From Dictatorship to Democracy 👑➡️🗳️
    • Jorge Ubico's reign: 13 years of right-wing dictatorship.
    • Big Twist: Juan José Arévalo gets elected as President (1944-50).
  • Arévalo's Policies: USA's Lil Bro? 🇺🇸🤝
    • New constitution made, inspired by the US.
    • Introduced 'spiritual socialism': Aims? Modernize, democratize, and elevate living standards.
    • What did he do?
      • Boosted health and education! 🏥🏫
      • Made better roads and stuff (infrastructure). 🛣️
      • Shared out the land to fix inequality. 🌾
