Decree 900 (1952) ๐Ÿ“Œ

  • Árbenz played 'Oprah' with uncultivated lands! ๐ŸŒฑ
    • Took large unused lands and distributed them to those without land.
  • United Fruit Company (UFCO) be like ๐Ÿ˜ก.
    • They had a LOT of this 'unused' land.
    • They said it was for 'preservation', not for growing fruits.
    • Thought the compensation was too low. Imagine getting 1 candy when expecting 10.

US Intervenes ๐Ÿ“Œ

  • UFCO ๐Ÿ“ข to the US: "Help! We're being robbed!"
  • US pressured Árbenz for more money for UFCO.
    • It's like when you ask your parents to step in because your sibling took your toy.
  • Real reason? Not just about land.
    • US, led by Eisenhower & Dulles, was afraid of a 'domino effect'.
      • If one country makes big reforms, others might follow! Like a trend.
    • Dulles painted Guatemala as the next 'hotspot' for communism.
    • Aim: Make everyone see communism as an 'outside interference' in the Americas.

Caracas Declaration & Rio Pact ๐Ÿ“Œ

  • US wanted support for military intervention.
  • Latin American countries: "US military? No thanks! We're more scared of you than communism."
    • So, US couldn't get the full backing for military action.
    • CIA Plan B: Operation sneaky-sneak (covert operation) against Árbenz.
