Chile: A Quick Dive into Its Background 🌍

  • Independence and Stability: Chile gained independence in 1810 and remained politically stable till the 1973 coup.
  • Economic Hiccups
    • World War II: 🥇 Chile was the top dog in copper supply globally.
    • Catch? 🇺🇸 Most of the copper was processed in the USA, and they pocketed most of the money.
    • Post-war: 💹 Copper prices dropped. Chile tried patching things up by borrowing from abroad and printing money. Result? 💸 Inflation and economic problems.
  • Boom! Population Growth: In the 1960s, Chile saw its population shoot up by 1.5 million, which piled on the economic challenges.
  • Political Landscape: Three major groups after WWII:
    • Conservatives: "Let's keep things as they are!"
    • Liberals (Christian Democratic Party): "We need some tweaks here and there, like in education and taxes."
    • Radicals: "Shake things up! Nationalize copper and reform the land!" One of the standout radical groups? FRAP (Frente de Acción Popular). Their man for the job in 1958? Salvador Allende. But the winner? Jorge Alessandri Rodríguez, a middle-ground guy.

🇺🇸 US's Chess Game in Chile Before 1970

  • Keeping Allende at Bay: Before Nixon, the US had a clear goal – don’t let Allende win. They played their cards by:
  • 💵 Funding Allende's political rivals.
  • 📢 Amplifying anti-Allende messages.
