At a Glance ⭐

Jimmy Carter faced a dilemma

  • New global situations required a new treaty with Panama.
  • But the US public mood made treaty ratification super tricky!

Background: The Canal's Origin 🌎

  • French Beginnings (1880)
    • The French kickstarted the 51-mile Panama Canal project.
    • Panama = Part of Colombia back then.
    • Ferdinand de Lesseps, Mr. Suez Canal Guy, led the construction.
  • USA Enters the Scene
    • President Theodore Roosevelt tried making a deal with Colombia.
    • Colombia: "No deal!"
    • Panamanian rebels: "Hey, US, help us break free from Colombia?"
    • Result? Boom! 1903: Panama becomes independent, and the US gets a deal with Panama.
  • The Original Deal - Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty (1903)
    • USA gets: Canal control + 5-mile land strip on either side (Panama Canal Zone) FOREVER!
    • Panama gets: Independence + $250,000/year. Colombia, the ex, gets $25 million to feel better.
    • Critics in Panama: "Hey, this feels like we're a US puppet now!"
  • Why the Canal Rocks
    • Major shortcut between the Pacific and Atlantic (Imagine Google Maps with a magic teleport feature).
    • 🚢 Trade was supercharged!
    • War times: The canal became a VIP highway for the US and buddies.
  • 1936 Update: The treaty got a makeover. Panama got a raise, but the US still wore the boss hat.
    • Side effects: Panama had a couple of "We're mad at you, USA!" moments in 1959 & 1964.
    • 1968's New Boss in Panama: Omar Torrijos. He's like, "Hey world, help us revisit this treaty, okay?"
