The Era of Redrawn Maps
- Wilson's Fourteen Points aimed for self-determination (example: think of it like selecting your favorite ice cream flavor; you decide based on your preference).
- As empires fell apart, new states formed. But, like a puzzle with pieces from different boxes, it didn't fit perfectly, leading to minorities in unfamiliar territories.
Europe's New Look
- France gets a comeback: Alsace-Lorraine returned to France (imagine taking back your stolen bicycle).
- Saarland's 15-Year Bet: Managed by League of Nations. After 15 years, they'd vote: stay with Germany or join France? Meanwhile, France gets their coal (like borrowing a friend's video game till they decide whose it truly is).
- Belgium gets a birthday gift: Eupen, Moresnet, and Malmedy join Belgium post-1920 vote.
- Germany's Split Personality
- Upper Silesia, Poznan, and West Prussia become part of Poland, creating the 'Polish Corridor'. Imagine a bridge giving Poland a path to the sea, cutting Germany in half.
- Danzig: Now a free city under the League of Nations (like a special city with its own rules).
- Denmark says "Thanks!": North Schleswig joins Denmark after voting (South Schleswig stays German).
- Post-Brest-Litovsk Returns: Germany gives back land taken from Russia. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania get "Independence Day" based on self-determination.
- Memel’s New Owner: Lithuania gets the port of Memel in 1922.
- Germany & Austria's 'No Dating Rule': They can't unite. No "Anschluss."
- Germany's Lost Adventures: Lost African colonies (think of them losing their outdoor adventure spots). Asia's territories were handed to Japan, Australia, New Zealand. Africa's went to Britain, France, Belgium, South Africa. But, they're "mandates," so they're kinda like areas under babysitting by the League of Nations.
The Big Bill – Reparations
- Why?: Allies blame Germany for the war; they should pay for damages (like breaking a vase and having to pay for it).
- The Price Tag: £6,600 million in 1921, as decided by the Inter-Allied Reparations Commission.
