Backdrop

  • Treaty of Versailles - Resentment brews. Many Germans felt humiliated by the treaty's terms.
  • Political Challenges: Street violence became an everyday scene due to political polarization. 🥊

Challenges from the Left 🟥

  • Spartacus League Uprising (5 January 1919)
    • Goal: Establish a revolutionary regime.
    • Twist: Limited support from the working class.
    • Ebert's Response: Called the army & the Freikorps (a paramilitary group) to suppress it. 😱
    • Result: Brutality led to bitterness within the left.

Real-world example: Think of this as a school protest where only a few students participate, but the principal calls in strong security to handle them.

  • Continued Left Revolts
    • Problem: No effective coordination + loss of key leaders (like Liebknecht and Luxemburg).
    • Brutal suppression made progress hard.
    • Middle-class fear: A communist revolution similar to Russia's might take place. 🇷🇺

Real-world example: Imagine different school groups trying to change a rule, but each has its plan, and they can't unite.
