The Identity Crisis ๐ŸŽญ

  • National Identity Issue: After uniting, Italy still lacked a sense of "being Italian."
    • Example: Imagine uniting multiple schools into one big school, but every student still cheers only for their original school's football team!
  • Language Barrier: Only 2% spoke the so-called national language - Tuscan dialect.
    • Example: It's like everyone in the US speaks their state language, but only 2% speak English!

The Political Drama ๐ŸŽฉ

  • Elitist Control: Northern elites ruled Liberal Italy. They didn’t really mix with the common people.
    • Think of it like a school with only the popular kids making all the decisions!
  • Two Italys Theory: One was 'legal' (King, parliament), the other was 'real' (everyday peasants).
  • Unstable Politics: 52 years, 29 prime ministers! Governments were as temporary as seasonal fashion trends.

Church vs. State ๐Ÿ•

  • Roman Question: The government took control from the Church, leading to a tiff between them.
    • Think of it as two parents fighting over who gets to decide the bedtime.
  • Election Boycott: The Pope was so mad, he told Catholics not to vote!

Social Movements & Conflicts ๐Ÿ“ข

  • Peasant Power: Peasant leagues and cooperatives flourished. Italian "agrarian socialism" was the trendsetter in Europe.
  • Workers Unite!: More workers = more unions. The Italian Socialist Party emerged in 1892.
    • But... they couldn’t decide how to change things: peaceful politics or dramatic overthrow?
