🎉 Get ready for a roller-coaster ride through Spain's policies under Primo de Rivera! 🎢

Economic Policies 📊

  • Golden Days and Rainy Days
    • Primo de Rivera shone till the Wall Street Crash in 1929.
    • Ever heard of the Great Depression? (If not, flip to Chapter 1, page 29). It followed the crash and was like the economic version of everyone forgetting your birthday. 😞
  • Keeping the Peace at Work
    • Spain had a massive headache with violent industrial disputes.
    • Solution? A system of arbitration for labour disputes (kind of like a referee during a heated soccer match ⚽).
    • Bonus: Government money for housing and healthcare. Score!
  • Dealing with Political Groups
    • Rivera was a smart player.
    • He got support from the Socialists and the UGT, but dodged tomatoes thrown by the Anarchists.
    • Plot Twist: Anarchists formed a secret extremist group in 1927 called FAI after Rivera banned their trade union, the CNT.
  • The Basque Strategy
    • Rivera said "no more" to autonomy for the Basques.
    • But, he played nice by letting Conservative Basques keep their jobs.
    • He gave the Basque economy a candy – tariffs on imported goods and subsidies.
  • Infrastructure & Trade Bonanza
    • Picture this: Spain getting new railways, roads, and electrified towns! 🌆
    • The icing on the cake? A railway link with France – it's like connecting Instagram to TikTok.
    • Spanish industry was on 🚀 mode – it grew 3x faster than before 1923!
    • Rivera gave local authorities a new power: they could borrow money for city upgrades.
    • World wanted a piece of Spain; foreign trade went up!
  • Closing Chapter in Morocco
    • Rivera finished a pricey war in Morocco in 1925.
    • And yes, the French helped (imagine Batman and Robin teaming up!)
