    • Franco needed to transfer his Africanista force across the Strait of Gibraltar.
    • Problem? Republic had control of the navy. Enter: Foreign Assistance.
  • Germany’s Initial Reaction
    • Cautious: Not ready for a full-blown European war.
    • Hermann Göring: Convinced Hitler to assist rebels. Two main reasons
      • Stop communism 🚫🔴
      • Test the new Luftwaffe (air force) in a real-world scenario.
  • Germany's "Bonus" Benefits
    • Economic: Access to iron ore and other minerals.
    • Strategic
      • Disrupt Anglo-French communications.
      • Gain naval bases.

    • Germans did the first ever military airlift, getting the Africanistas to mainland Spain.

    • Originally part of NIC, but Germany left by May 1937.

    • Bombing in April 1937 by the Condor Legion and Italian Aviazione Legionaria.
    • Claim? It was a military target.
    • Real Reason? Wipe out Basque resistance.

    • Bilbao (June 1937): Captured naval shipyards & enhanced Nationalist communication.
    • Basque Army (August 1937): Surrendered! Some say Germans masterminded this campaign.
    • Fall of Catalonia: Condor Legion supplied rebels with German equipment.
    • Air Superiority: Thanks to Messerschmitt 109s in 1937, Nationalists ruled the skies.
