💡 Big Idea: The Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, had to ensure that every aspect of life was geared towards winning the civil war. Their initial measures didn't quite work, so they introduced a set of stricter measures called War Communism.

Features of War Communism 📋

  • 🏭 Nationalization of Industry
    • Took all industries under the state's wing.
    • The previous plan giving workers control? Fail. Major shortages.
    • Shifted focus to war production.
    • Introduced super long work hours with no pay. 😲
    • Fines for being late & missing work, with passports to stop escapes.

Real-world example: Imagine your school was the industry. Before, students were allowed to teach themselves. Chaos, right? Now, all of a sudden, the school board steps in, orders everyone to study only one subject (say, history), and gives detentions for even minor mistakes.

  • 🌾 Grain Requisitioning
    • The big idea? Force peasants to give up their grain.
    • Soldiers were dispatched to take grain by force.
    • In 1918, an official "Food Police" was set up. If you resisted, Cheka (the secret police) would nab you.

Real-world example: Think of the government suddenly demanding all your snacks and only giving you a small piece back. You'd probably stop buying them, right?

  • 🚫 Ban on Private Trade & Rationing
    • Absolutely no private selling.
    • Rations were based on your social class.
    • The ex-rich got the least, while the Red Army ate the most.

Real-world example: Imagine everyone in school getting lunch based on grades. A-students get a three-course meal, while D-students only get an apple.
