📌The end of american isolationism

  • 1939: Europe’s Call for Help! 🌍
    • Europe goes BOOM! 💥 (War starts)
    • USA: “We’re neutral… but… here’s our new Neutrality Act!” (It’s complicated!)
  • Main Change: Repealed the arms embargo ➡️ Belligerents can now buy arms if:
    • They pay 💰 in cash.
    • They use their own ships 🚢.
  • Whose Shopping List?
    • Main Customers: 🇬🇧 Britain & 🇫🇷 France.
    • Why? Most Americans thought: “Let them do the fighting. We’ll supply the arms, so we don’t have to join the war.”
  • Oops! Wrong Assumption! 😬
    • 1940: France waves the white flag 🏳️ and surrenders in June.
    • BUT 🇬🇧 Britain stands tall and doesn’t fall!
    • Roosevelt's Plan B
    • Got Congress' thumbs up 👍 in 1941.
    • Transferred ‘surplus’ planes, guns, ammo to Britain.
    • Started the Lend-Lease programme (basically, the US lending war goodies to their pals).

🌍 Real-world example: Imagine a friend telling you they’ll take care of a bully if you lend them your baseball bat and gear. You agree, thinking you won’t have to confront the bully yourself. That’s how the US felt about helping Britain and France.

📌 Final stages to global war

  • Japan: The Asian Powerhouse 🌏
    • Niall Ferguson's Wisdom: “The only thing stopping Japan from dominating South-East Asia? Good ol’ USA.”
    • Japan's Occupations: China 🇨🇳 & French Indochina 🇫🇷🇻🇳.
    • Consequence: USA and Japan's friendship status? 📉 It's complicated.
  • Japan’s Shopping List Problem 🛍️
    • Japan lacks resources for making weapons.
    • Imports Fun Fact: 1/3 of Japan's imports (like cotton, iron scraps, oil) come from… guess who? 🇺🇸 USA!
    • Japan's Army Wanted: To strike north against the Soviet Union 🇷🇺.
    • But, the plan didn’t work out. So, they depended on their Navy to control coastal cities.
  • Changing the Power Dynamics ⚖️
    • Navy's power goes 📈 in Tokyo.
    • Nazi-Soviet Pact: Made war against Soviet Union a no-go for Japan.
    • Japan's Dilemma: No more trade with USA = Need for new resource suppliers in Asia.
    • Solution? Eyeing those oil-rich Dutch East Indies.

🌍 Real-world example: Picture this: You bake the best cookies but need chocolate chips from your neighbor. If they stop sharing, you might go looking in another friend’s kitchen or even consider “borrowing” without asking.
