Introduction - the challenge 🤔

  • Context: Germany, 1933. Weak and unable to challenge the Treaty of Versailles.

Real-world example: Imagine you're playing a video game where you start at Level 1 with very basic equipment. Germany was essentially at Level 1 in 1933, trying to level up and become a formidable power.

Hitler’s power moves 🎮

  • Destroying Democracy 🗳️
    • Decree for the Protection of the People and State: Imagine democracy as a game everyone gets to play. Hitler paused the game, taking all the controllers for himself.
    • Enabling Law: Hitler's "cheat code". Allowed him to make new game rules without asking other players (Reichstag).
    • Combining Roles: On Hindenburg's death, Hitler became both the player and the game master by becoming the führer.
  • Gleichschaltung (Coordination) 🤝
    • All other teams (political parties) were banned. Only Team Nazi played the game.
    • Trade unions? Swapped out for Team Nazi's German Labour Front.
    • Local governments? Centralized, like having one main game server.
    • Hitler Youth: Think of it as Team Nazi's training academy.

Real-world example: It's like if someone started monopolizing all your board games, ensuring only their rules apply and only their team wins.

Eliminating opposition 🚫

  • Army & SA Purge 🔪
    • Remember the SA? Old school Nazis. They were "removed from the game".
    • Army's new oath? It's like switching team jerseys, but now it had Hitler’s face on it.
  • Propaganda Ministry 📢
    • Controlled all in-game announcements and updates. Ensured only Hitler's achievements were on the leaderboard.
    • School reforms & indoctrination: Young players were taught only Team Nazi's version of the game.
  • Mass Rallies 🎉
    • Like giant in-game events to show off Team Nazi's power-ups and achievements.

Real-world example: Think about how some celebrities manage their image and PR, controlling what stories go out and even sometimes having "hype events". This was Hitler, but on a much darker scale.

The police state 🚓

  • SS & Gestapo
    • Hitler's elite gamer squad and secret moderators, ensuring no one could break his rules or oppose him.
    • People were encouraged to report rule-breakers. Imagine if in an online game, players got rewards for reporting others.
  • Concentration Camps ⛓️:
    • The ultimate punishment for those who defied Team Nazi. A dark, horrific aspect of this "game".

Real-world example: Imagine a super strict school principal who not only punished rule-breakers but also had students report on each other. That's the environment Hitler created, but much more terrifying.
