The What and Why

  • The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a plan by the CIA, approved by President Eisenhower and later by President Kennedy, aiming to overthrow Castro's government in Cuba.
  • Trained Cuban refugees were to invade Cuba.
  • Out of 1400 invaders, 1214 were captured.
  • Captured invaders released for a ransom: $53 million in food & machines by US voluntary groups.

🎓 Real-world example: Imagine planning a surprise birthday party, but the person finds out and instead of a surprise, you end up cleaning their backyard as punishment.

Who took the blame? 🤦‍♂️

  • Major embarrassment for Kennedy.
  • While many blamed Kennedy, later research revealed the CIA's miscalculations were more to blame.
    • Overestimated support against Castro within Cuba.
    • Expected a popular uprising against Castro which never happened.
    • Flawed invasion plans – lack of ammunition, no air cover, and underestimated Castro's air force.
    • Despite CIA's assurance, the exiles needed US Air Force cover – which Kennedy couldn't publicly support.

🎓 Real-world example: It's like betting all your money on a soccer team thinking they're the best, but they end up losing because the other team had a secret superstar player.
