Snapshot 🐉

  • When: 1 October 1949
  • What: Mao Zedong declared the People's Republic of China
  • Famous Quote: "The Chinese, who comprise one quarter of humanity, have from now on stood up."

Background Juice 🌍

  • China-Russia Relations - A Rocky Romance

    • A massive 4500-mile shared border (that's like the distance from New York to Hawaii and back!)
    • China lost territories to Russia in the 19th century. Ouch!
    • Reason? China's struggle against other Western countries' domination.
    • Manchu Dynasty failed, leading to its downfall in 1911's nationalist revolution.
  • New Neighbors: After the Tsarist empire in Russia crumbled, the new Bolsheviks seemed friendly. They were like, "Hey, we'll give back some territories!" But... plot twist! They took Outer Mongolia and robbed Manchuria of $2 billion equipment post-WW2.

Civil War Drama in China 🔥

  • Enter CCP: Inspired by the Bolshevik success in Russia, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) grew stronger.

  • Common Goals, Different Paths: CCP and Guomindang (GMD or Nationalist Party) both wanted to uplift China, but their methods? Not so much in sync.

  • GMD vs. CCP: Imagine two big school factions. GMD led by Jiang Jieshi saw CCP as its arch-nemesis. They stopped fighting only when they had a common bully - Japan. But when Japan left the playground (post-WW2), they were at each other's throats again.

  • Winner Winner Chicken Dinner: By October 1949, Mao's CCP emerged as the top dog.
