Static friction - holding everything in place 🛑

  • Definition: The force that keeps an object from moving.
  • Formula: Ff ≤ μsFN
  • μs: Coefficient of static friction.
  • The “≤” symbol means the static friction force can vary from zero to a maximum value.
  • Fun Fact! Ever tried pushing a heavy sofa and felt that initial resistance? That's static friction at work! The moment it starts moving, things change!

Dynamic friction - the slide begins 🛷

  • Definition: The force acting once an object starts sliding.
  • Formula: Ff = μdFN
    • μd: Coefficient of dynamic friction.
  • It only works when surfaces are moving against each other.
  • Ice Skating Example: When you first push off, you overcome static friction. As you glide, you deal with dynamic friction (though ice is super slippery, so it's minimal).

Friction facts 🤓

  • Values of μs and μd change based on surfaces and conditions.
  • Surfaces can be lubricated to reduce friction.
  • Coefficients of friction don’t have units.
  • Some surfaces can have friction greater than the weight of an object!

Physics tools 🔧

  • Tool : Measuring angles accurately.
  • Calculations with fractions and trig ratios.
  • Drawing and understanding free-body diagrams.
  • Resolving vectors (two perpendicular components).
