Key points

Bias can pop up in two main areas of correlational research:

  • Variable Measurement
  • Interpretation of Findings

Biases can come from the way we measure things. Think of it like this: if you're trying to measure the length of a snake with a ruler, but the snake keeps squiggling around, then your measurement could be off. This is a bit like how bias works in psychological research. For instance:

  • If we're using observation to measure a variable, we need to watch out for biases. Say, we're observing how long students stay focused during an online class. Our observations could be biased if we personally believe that "students can't focus online" and interpret every yawn or glance away from the screen as lack of focus.

  • If we're using questionnaires to measure variables, there might be biases here too. Imagine asking teens about their music preferences. If you phrase a question like "Don't you think classical music is boring?", it's already leading the responder to a specific answer, hence, introducing bias.

Bias can also happen when we interpret our findings. For instance:

  • Curvilinear relationships: If there's a suspicion that the relationship between variables isn't a straight line but more like a curve, researchers need to make scatter plots. A scatter plot is like a party where every data point gets invited and can hang out wherever it wants on a graph. This allows us to see if the points follow a straight path or if they like to curve and twist around!

  • Third variable problem: Sometimes a sneaky "third variable" can make it look like there's a connection between two other variables. It's like thinking there's a relationship between eating ice cream and shark attacks, but in reality, they both just happen more in summer - a third variable!

  • Spurious correlations: These are false relationships, kind of like thinking your umbrella causes rain because you noticed it often rains when you carry it. Just because two things seem related, doesn't mean one causes the other!

Comparisons between correlational research and experimental research can be made in terms of sampling, generalizability, credibility, and bias. It's like comparing apples and oranges - they might be different types of fruit (research), but we can still look at things like color, taste, or how they grow (sampling, credibility, etc.).

 

Some key questions to think about are:

 

In what ways are correlational and experimental research different?

 

In what ways are they similar?

 

Are there times when they might use different words to describe the same thing?
