The four goals of science 🎯

  • Description: It's like naming your pet; you have to know what to call it! In psychology, we have neat classification systems like ICD-10 or DSM-5 that help us identify and name problems.
    • Example: Think of your math teacher describing a geometry shape; it's a similar idea, but with emotions and behaviors!
  • Explanation: We don't just want to know what it is; we want to know WHY it's there. This is like a detective finding out who committed a crime and how.
    • Example: Ever wonder why ice cream melts in the sun? This is the "why" part of psychology, but with diseases.
  • Prediction: Once we know why something happens, we can guess what will happen next.
    • Example: If you leave that ice cream in the sun, you predict it'll melt. Similarly, we predict how a mental disorder might progress.
  • Control: If we can predict it, we can control it. That means treating or even preventing the problem.
    • Example: Imagine controlling the weather so your ice cream never melts. In psychology, we try to do this with disorders!

Understanding disorders 🤔

  • Etiology: This is a fancy word for the causes of a disease or condition.
    • Example: Like knowing that staying up late might cause you to be tired the next day.
  • Different Approaches: Depending on how we look at behavior, we might find different reasons for a disorder.
  • Biological: It's in the genes or brain chemicals!
    • Example with MDD (Depression): Some people's genes make them more likely to have unusual levels of brain chemicals, leading to depression. It's like being born with a sweet tooth - you can't help but crave sugar; some people can't help but feel a certain way because of their biology.
  • Cognitive: How people think can cause problems.
    • Example with MDD: Ever get stuck in a negative thinking loop? That can lead to depression.
  • Sociocultural: Society and culture play a part, too!
    • Example with MDD: If you grow up in a place where everyone is super competitive and you feel constant pressure to succeed, it might lead to depression.

So there you have it, explorers of the mind! 🚀 Next time you feel down, think about whether it's your biology, your thinking, or your surroundings. Or better yet, maybe use this knowledge to help someone else understand themselves. Now you have the tools to describe, explain, predict, and control like a true psychological wizard!
