The "Nurture" side of things 🌱

  • What’s Going On? The social approach emphasizes the role of socialization in gender identity development.
  • Other Approaches? Biological and cognitive ones also recognize social factors but don't stress them as much.
  • Real-World Example: Think of a garden. Some gardeners (biological and cognitive theorists) believe that the soil type and plant genes are most critical. But others (social theorists) say it's all about the watering and sunshine (socialization processes)!

Social influences - adults & peers 👨‍👩‍👧

  • Influence by Adults: Parents and other adults play a big role.
    • Social Learning Theory (Bandura): Gender roles learned through two methods:
      • Direct Tuition: Adults encourage acceptable gender behavior and discourage the other.
      • Modelling: Learning by seeing (vicarious learning).
      • Bobo Doll Experiments: Watching adults hit a doll, kids copy them. Same-sex models have more influence.
      • Real-World Example: Imagine watching your big brother play guitar. You might try to mimic him just because he's a cool guy like you!
  • Baby X Studies 🍼
    • What’s This?: Studies that investigate how adults respond to babies based on perceived sex.
    • Findings: Dress a baby in blue or pink, and adults will choose gender-stereotyped toys.
    • Real-World Example: Ever notice how baby boys often get toy trucks, while girls get dolls? Color-coded onesies could be why!
  • Limitations: Social learning doesn’t explain why kids in the same environment may have different gender identities.
