Study highlights

  • The Sample: Young peeps from Sierra Leone who had been through war (Ages 10-17), many of whom were ex-child soldiers. Real tough cookies!

  • What They Did: Three interviews, over six years. Picture a movie trilogy that follows these kids' journey!

  • Findings: They identified four main "paths" that these kids took dealing with inner turmoil (anxiety and depression), kind of like story arcs:

    • The "I'm Cool" Crew: 41% maintained low levels of anxiety and depression over time.
    • The "Getting Better" Gang: 48% improved over time, even with limited access to help. Talk about self-growth!
    • The "Constant Strugglers": 5% consistently reported severe difficulties.
    • The "Getting Worse" Warriors: 6% experienced worsening symptoms over time. It's a tough fight, folks!
  • Troublemakers: Loss of caregiver, family abuse, neglect, and community stigma related to their soldier past. No surprise here: lack of support after trauma hurts.
